First Giving Days: Spotlight on George Washington University

Have you ever wondered if your school should add a yearly Giving Day to your annual fundraising strategy? Giving Days are proven to help get constituents excited to give back to their institutions and create a sense of urgency to donate within a specific timeframe. They are also helpful in encouraging donors to make a second (or third) gift during the fiscal year.

Some might wonder, “Is it too late for my school to add a Giving Day?” The answer to this question is a resounding NO! Over and over, we’ve seen schools add Giving Days to their list of strategies with strong results. Take George Washington University (GW), for example. 

Founded in 1821, GW celebrated their bicentennial year by launching their first ever Giving Day in April of 2021. They invited alumni, students, parents, faculty, and friends to “Change a Student’s Life and Change the World.” 

As GW fundraisers prepared to host their inaugural Giving Day festivities, they turned to the GiveCampus Partner Success Team for help planning the big day and implementing best practices. The GW team met regularly with their Partner Success Lead to review strategy. They also leaned on GiveCampus University (GCU), a partner-exclusive content hub containing hundreds of how-to guides, tips, and templates—all written and carefully curated by experienced educational fundraisers.

So how did GW’s first-ever Giving Day go? They crushed it:

  • Their goal was to raise $300k in a 24-hour period. In the end they raised $969,993—that’s 323% of their goal! 
  • Of that, $104k can be directly attributed to peer-to-peer sharing. That’s right, GW was able to raise over $100,000 from friends telling their friends about giving back to their alma mater. 
  • GW also made it easy for donors to give to a cause they cared about. Donors were able to give to 14 different funds during the Day of Giving, allowing people to give to areas they cared about most.

GiveCampus Raises $50 Million Investment Led by Silversmith Capital Partners

WASHINGTON, DC – September 19, 2022 – GiveCampus, a leading fundraising platform for nonprofit educational institutions, announced today that it has closed a $50 million minority growth equity investment led by Silversmith Capital Partners, a Boston-based growth equity firm. Several individual investors also participated in the financing including Y Combinator’s Michael Seibel, Stripe’s Claire Hughes Johnson and founding HubSpot team member, Mike Volpe. As part of the investment, Silversmith has committed significant additional capital to provide GiveCampus employees with liquidity through a tender offer. The financing marks the first time the bootstrapped company has raised capital since raising less than $1 million from family, friends, angel investors, and Y Combinator in 2015. The capital will be used to accelerate product development and hiring across the organization.

GiveCampus was founded in 2014 by Kestrel Linder and Mike Kong to advance the quality, affordability, and accessibility of education by providing non-profit educational institutions with a modern platform to reach, engage and mobilize their communities. GiveCampus will become the first and only educational fundraising platform to process cryptocurrency donations

Washington, D.C. – April 20, 2021 – GiveCampus, the world’s leading digital fundraising and volunteer management platform for nonprofit educational institutions, announced today that it will begin facilitating cryptocurrency donations for the nearly 1,000 schools on its platform in 2021. This news comes only weeks after GiveCampus launched a first-of-its-kind integration that enables donors to make donations with Venmo, and further expands the broad suite of modern payment options available to donors on the GiveCampus platform.

GiveCampus is integrating with The Giving Block to process cryptocurrency donations. The Giving Block is the leading cryptocurrency solution used by nonprofits including United Way, American Cancer Society, Save The Children, and Team Rubicon. As The Giving Block’s exclusive partner for cryptocurrency donations to educational institutions, GiveCampus will be the sole provider of The Giving Block’s unique technology to colleges, universities, and K-12 schools.

More than 100 million people own cryptocurrency and the value held in cryptocurrency has more than doubled over the last three months. In recent weeks, major financial institutions have embraced cryptocurrency: in March, Morgan Stanley announced it will offer access to funds containing cryptocurrency and Visa announced it will allow payment settlement using cryptocurrency.

Donating cryptocurrency has significant tax benefits for donors. The IRS considers cryptocurrency to be property for Federal income tax purposes, so donors receive a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the donated cryptocurrency and they do not have to pay capital gains taxes. This means schools will receive donations that are 20-30% larger than if donors instead needed to sell their cryptocurrency and donate the after-tax proceeds. The average cryptocurrency donation made to a nonprofit using The Giving Block is approximately ten times as large as the average online donation made using other payment methods.

“Cryptocurrency is the best performing asset class of the last decade, with more users than every U.S. brokerage combined,” said Pat Duffy, Co-Founder at The Giving Block. “Crypto-enabled schools will have a decisive fundraising edge over their peers, and with this partnership, we’re making it easy for schools to gain that edge.” 

With this new capability, GiveCampus will become the only fundraising platform enabling cryptocurrency donations for schools, just as it is the only platform to offer a Venmo and PayPal integration built for educational donors. This new offering also complements GiveCampus’s new GC Wealth service, which provides schools with cutting-edge wealth data and analytics to identify major donor prospects—many of whom may prefer the tax benefits of making cryptocurrency donations.
